The City of Bryan is currently accepting applications for Staff Planner and Senior Planner. This position performs a wide-range of duties involved in providing professional and technical assistance and support to the City of Bryan’s land use planning team.

Hiring Pay Rate
$58,000-$70,000/year (depending on qualifications)

Responsibilities

  • Assists with planning and development review responsibilities and administration of City ordinances and guidelines through the development review process.
  • Assists with site plan approvals, zone changes, conditional use permits, planning variances, right-of-way abandonments, exceptions to subdivision regulations as well as final plat and replat requests; provides case management in accordance with policies and procedures established for the development review process.
  • Conducts research and data collection.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, presentations, and other documents as needed.
  • Makes presentations at Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, Zoning Board of Adjustment meetings, Historic Landmark Commission, meetings other community meetings and/or City Council meetings as needed.
  • Explains development policies, procedures, and ordinances to assist citizens and the development community.
  • Assists in neighborhood planning and preservation activities, including preparing preservation plans and strategies and serving as a liaison to neighborhood groups and citizens.
  • Acts as staff liaison to City boards and commissions as needed.
  • Identifies and recommends new methods for administering planning and zoning programs and maintains data for future updates of the Comprehensive Plan and development-related ordinances.
  • Prepares, commits to, and implements a structured, self-directed program for continuing professional education that leads to certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP); fulfill other professional education obligations as may be required; subscribe to AICP Code of Ethics.
  • Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Staff Planner:
Bachelor’s degree in with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Transportation, Urban Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Economics or a similar field of study plus at least 2 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree with major coursework as listed above plus related experience preferred.

Senior Planner:
Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Transportation, Urban Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Economics or a similar field of study plus at least four (4) years of related experience; or a Master’s degree with major coursework as listed above plus at least two (2) years of related experience.

Certification Requirements

  • At the Staff Planner level an American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) Certification is preferred, and must be obtained within the time frame set by the department. Certification is required at the Senior Planner level.
